Jack Spencer (1959-89/ Basketball Coach)

Spencer was involved with the Nevada basketball team as head coach for 13 years and assistant coach for 16 more between the years of 1959 and his retirement last year. His span as head coach encompassed the school’s transition form Division II to Division I basketball. He guided his team to three Far West Conference championships, compiling an overall record of 126-196. After his resignation in 1972, he returned to the program the next year ad served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under four subsequent head coaches. In a retirement story in the Reno Gazette/Journal, John Schumacher wrote “Spencer’s career cannot be measured just in wins and in losses championships and titles. His biggest contribution was not in numbers, but in people.”
