Swimming and Diving head coach Abby Steketee shares her thoughts on a group of
student-athletes that volunteered at the Great Reno Balloon Races.
On Friday, about a dozen swimmers ran the Tissue Paper
Balloon Launch, an event at the GRBR.
Literally hundreds of third through sixth graders came to launch
balloons - some of which were four feet tall.
The swimmers were in charge of inflating/heating the balloons using large,
extremely hot chimneys. When the balloon
was hot and inflated, they would lead a "3-2-1" countdown before
launching the balloons. The kids would
shriek and then chase their balloons.
Almost every launch was successful and one balloon made it all the way across
McCarran from the park.
