RENO, Nev. The University of Nevada cross country team will compete in the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship Saturday morning in Fresno, Calif. The meet, which is hosted by Fresno State, will be held at Woodward Park. This course served as host for the 2004 NCAA Western Regional Championship meet. The championships will begin with an 8000m men’s race at 9 a.m. followed by a 5000m women’s race at 10 a.m. An awards ceremony will take place after the women’s race.
Current Runners on Nevada’s Career List:
Eight Pack runners added their names to the 5000m (sub 20 minutes) career list this season (Charlotte Schnbeck, Amanda Moreno, Amanda Gramly, Kristin Palmer, Mandy Russ, Hannah Balkenbush, Tiffany Tandy and Christa Avena). Schnbeck and Gramly added their names to the 6000m (sub 24 minutes) career list in 2006, while Moreno and Gramly broke onto the 4000m (sub 16 minutes) career list. Moreno and Palmer rank first and sixth respectively on the freshman 5000 sub 20 minutes list. Moreno also ranks first on the freshman 4000m sub 16 minutes list.
Last Time Out:
Nevada had two runners finish in the top three and as a team the Pack took sixth overall at the 5K Santa Clara Invitational at Baylands Regional Park. Sophomore Charlotte Schnbeck finished first overall (17:24) while freshman Amanda Moreno took third (17:38). One hundred and thirty-six runners competed in the race.
Schnbeck’s time of 17:24 is the third best time in school history. Moreno’s time of 17:38 places her sixth on Nevada’s all-time list and her time is the best freshman time in program history. Seven of the Pack’s runners set new personal records, with the exception of Schnbeck who was competing in her first career 5K race.
Junior Amanda Gramly finished 34th at 18:35 and beat her previous personal best by 51 seconds. Freshman Kristin Palmer came in one second behind Gramly (18:36, 35th place) as Palmer beat her previous personal best by 36 seconds.
The Pack’s number five runner, Mandy Russ, finished in 19:05 (65th place). Sophomores Hannah Balkenbush, Tiffany Tandy and Christa Avena all set new personal bests. Balkenbush finished in 79th place (19:27), Tandy in 83rd (19:37) and Avena in 87th (19:42). Senior Ashley Holt finished in 20:22 (107th place).
The Pack will compete in the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships on Nov. 11 in Albuquerque, N.M. The meet with take place at the UNM North Golf Course and will begin at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
