2013 Nevada cross country team
Oct. 16, 2013
RENO, Nev. -
The University of Nevada cross country team is heading to Terre Haute, Ind. to compete in the 2013 Pre-National Invitational on the Laverne Gibson Cross Country Course. The Pack will race at 9:55 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 19th.
Nevada is sending its top seven to run against some of the strongest teams the program will have faced all season. The team will be joined by three other Mountain West schools at the meet; Boise State, Colorado State, and Utah State, but will be racing in different divisions. Nevada will be racing in the women’s 6,000-meter white race against 34 teams from across the country. Boise State, Colorado State and Utah State will be competing in the 51 team women’s 6,000-meter blue race, scheduled to begin at 8:40 a.m.
The Pack should have lots of confidence heading into the race after nine student-athletes set personal records last Friday at the NCAA Multi-Regional Jamboree hosted by Sacramento State. Head coach Kirk Elias has been impressed with the team’s performances in recent races, “The team has almost been overachieving in races, racing on their physical strength.”
Coach Elias is familiar with course in Terre Haute, and hopes to see his team build off of its performance in the team’s last race. “I want to see them run conservatively and work on passing in the last two thirds of the race,” coach Elias said, “The race begins with a tough uphill, followed by a long downhill stretch, and I expect the race to go out very fast. Our runners should be able to take advantage of others getting chewed up early.”
Nevada is also sending a talented cast to compete in the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara University at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, Calif. The crew heading over the hill will be competing for the 8th and 9th spots on the team, and a chance to make the traveling team for the Mountain West Championships. The team's 6,000 meter race will be at 9:45 a.m.
Following the Pre-National Invitational the Pack will be gearing up for the Mountain West Championships on November 1st in Colorado Springs, Colo.
