RENO, Nev. -
Under a crescent moon and 32 light towers, the Nevada Wolf Pack got their 2013 season underway with a night time romp over UNLV and Pacific at the seventh annual Nature’s Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic on Saturday evening. The veteran Wolf Pack harriers showed their discipline and experience with the majority of the team running a controlled first half before shifting gears to negative split and easily roll past the Rebels and Tigers.
After 3 very strange weeks which included altered training and a cancellation of their season opener, all due to smoke from two major California forest fires, the Wolf Pack finally got to don their uniforms for the annual race under lights on the soft, hilly Shadow Mountain course. In spite of a coaching decision which had the Pack race in flats instead of spikes and undoubtedly slowed times, senior Sam Diaz broke the course record she set last year by 6 seconds.
Diaz led Demerey Kirsch, Caitlin Devitt-Payne, and Emily Myers across the finish line before Pacific and UNLV’s first runner. With the fast closing Erika Root not quite able to nip UNLV’s first runner, Nevada just missed a skunk of their in-state and conference rival.
The Wolf Pack now enters a three week training block before traveling to Minnesota for the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, September 28th. The national class meet held on the University of Minnesota’s hilly Les Bolstad Golf Course annually draws 25-35 Division I teams from around the country all seeking “wins” against teams from other regions for points to be used in November for earning national at-large qualifying berths.
