RENO, Nev. -

The University of Nevada cross country team will begin its 2013 season by hosting the Nature's Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks, Nev. Saturday evening. The event under lights will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Nature's Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic is a combined meet featuring races for student athletes, beginning with a middle school race, high school race, and the women's open/collegiate race.  Eighth grade and under boys and girls will kick-off the meet with a 3,000 meter race starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by an unattached community race and high school races beginning in 23 minute intervals.  The women's 4,000 meter collegiate/open race will start at 9:11 p.m., followed by the large school varsity girl's race at 9:32 p.m. to conclude the evening.

The cross country team is in action this week after last week's race, the Nevada Chase Race, was cancelled due to the unhealthy air quality with smoke in the area from nearby California wild fires.  While the smoke has been a problem, Nevada head coach Kirk Elias does not believe that it will hold his team back, "We are ready to go," he said in a statement. "We may not be as sharp, but our fitness level is very high."  On days when air quality has been unhealthy the team has been working out inside using spin bikes to maintain the team's fitness level.  Coach Elias believes that the team's general fitness level is as high as it can be, and expects them to run strong. "I told the team I am not worried about times for this weekend, but I am interested in competing.  I want to see them Compete during the last quarter mile, and run tough when someone tries to pass them." He also said that he is considering adding a race to make up for the canceled Nevada Chase Race, "I may add another race if I feel as though we need more race experience."

Nevada returns a talented cast of runners, including school 4,000 and 6,000 meter record holder senior Samantha Diaz, last season's Mountain West Freshman of the Year Emily Meyers and local talents junior Demerey Kirsch and sophomore Erika Root who are third and 12th respectively on the Nevada all-time 4,000 meter record list.
