The University of Nevada cross country team will host the Nature’s Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks, Nev. The meet which has divisions for eighth grade and under, high school and college, will be Nevada’s second home meet of the 2012 season. The team opened up the year with a first place finish at the Nevada Chase Race last week at Rancho San Rafael Park.
“The Nature’s Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic should be a great meet on a couple of levels,” head coach Kirk Elias said. “First, the team gets a really tough early season test with 29th ranked national power (and 3rd regionally) BYU, regionally ranked Utah (6th), and in-state and conference foe UNLV. We will really see where we stand after this race. Second, it is a great experience for the athletes to compete under lights at night. It is cool, there is a large crowd, and it is a real kick to race under lights.”
The meet begins at 6:10 p.m. with eighth grade and under boys and girls running 3,000-meters. The divisions will then run at 25 minute intervals for junior varsity boys and girls and small school/large school varsity boys and girls. The college/open women division will run at 9:10 p.m., followed by the community/open race that will begin at 9:40 p.m. to close out the meet. Participating cross country programs include Nevada, BYU, Utah, and UNLV.
Nevada won its previous meet at the Nevada Chase Race with 38 points, UC Riverside took second with 39 points, and UCLA finished third with 50 points. The first place finish was an improvement on the fourth place finish Nevada had during the 2011 season. The Wolf Pack was led by junior Samantha Diaz who placed second, finishing with a time of 12:01. Freshman Emily Myers finished in fifth with a time of 12:19, while sophomore Demerey Kirsch finished in eighth with a time of 12:21.
Results from the meet will be available immediately following the final race of the day at NevadaWolfPack.com.
