Nevada opens season Friday Night
Aug. 30, 2012
RENO, Nev. -
The University of Nevada cross country team will open the 2012 season at home, hosting the Nevada Chase Race at Rancho San Rafael Park Friday evening. The Chase Race is the first of two consecutive home meets for the Wolf Pack, as it will host the Nature’s Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic at Shadow Mountain Park next Saturday.
“I am excited for the team to open up the season on Friday at the Chase Race,” head coach Kirk Elias said. “ This group did their work this summer. They came in the most fit of any team we have had in five years. If they continue their good work, the team could be a surprise this fall.”
The Chase Race will have both a men’s and a women’s race with runners competing from Nevada, UCLA, and UC Riverside. The men’s race will begin at 5:45 p.m. while the women’s will begin at 6:15 p.m.
The format of the race is a handicap style race with the lowest-ranked athletes starting first followed by groups of higher-ranked athletes at regular intervals. The intention of this format is to create more excitement of the final mile of the race with athletes finishing closer together in the latter stages of the race.
Athletes will start in groups based on their position on their team. The seventh, eighth and lower- ranked athletes on a team will start when the gun is fired. Thirty seconds later the fifth and sixth runners from each team will start. Thirty seconds later the third and fourth runners from each team will start. Finally, thirty seconds later, the first and second runners from each team will start. After the race is complete, the individual athlete's handicap time will be subtracted to create individual and team results just like a traditional race without the handicaps.
Nevada is coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2011 WAC Championships. Sophomore Demerey Kirsch returns for the Pack, receiving second-team All-WAC honors last season. Fans wishing to track updates of the meet are encouraged to follow the team and head coach Kirk Elias on Twitter @WolfPackTrack or @KirkElias. Results from the meet will be available immediately following the final race of the day at NevadaWolfPack.com.
