RENO, Nev. -
The University of Nevada cross country team opened the 2012 season with a first place finish in the Nevada Chase Race Friday evening in Reno, Nev.
“It was a nice opener for the team,” head coach Kirk Elias said. “We trained hard this week. In spite of some tired legs the team pulled out the win.”
Nevada won the meet with 38 points, UC Riverside took second with 39 points, and UCLA finished third with 50 points. The first place finish is an improvement on the fourth place finish Nevada had during the 2011 season.
The Wolf Pack was led by senior Samantha Diaz who placed second, finishing with a time of 12:01. Freshman Emily Myers finished in fifth with a time of 12:19, while sophomore Demerey Kirsch finished in eighth with a time of 12:21.
“I am very pleased with our depth,” Elias said. “For the first time in a while we had team members who could fill in when others struggled.”
Nevada returns to action in its second consecutive home meet, the Nature’s Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic next week. The race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8 beginning at 6:20 p.m. at Shadow Mountain Park.
