Pack Defeat UC Davis In Five Sets





Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada (4-3) volleyball team defeated UC Davis (6-3) in five sets by scores of 25-19, 19-25, 19-25, 25-13 and 15-10 on day two of the AT&T Invitational at the Virginia Street Gym Saturday afternoon.  With the victory the Wolf Pack improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 on the weekend.  UCD is now 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the invitational.  In the first match of the day Pepperdine (8-0) defeated Missouri (4-4) 25-15, 25-23 and 25-18.

 

The fifth and deciding set went back forth early before the Pack put together a 5-1 run following a timeout to turn a one-point lead at 9-8 into a five point cushion 14-9 on the way to the 15-10 win.  Sophomore Lindsay Baldwin ended the match with her 15th kill, which ties her career high, off an assist by junior setter Sonnie SeiNevada hit .176 in the final set and held the Aggies to an attack percentage of zero.

 

There were nine ties and three lead changes in the first set before the Pack won 25-19.  The final tie occurred at 17-17 and Nevada scored the next three points on the way to victory.  Sophomore Kylie Harrington sealed the win with her kill of a Sei assist.  The Pack hit .286 and UCD .048 in the first set.

 

After 10 ties and five lead changes in set two UCD prevailed 25-19 to even the match at one set apiece.  Following a 15-15 tie the Aggies outscored Nevada 10-4 the rest of the way to take the set.  UCD hit an outstanding .387 in the set and Nevada .107.

 

After the break UCD continued their hot hitting with a blistering .556 in set three to win 25-19 and take a 2-1 advantage in the match.  The Aggies led by as many as nine points but settled for the six point victory.  Nevada hit .243 in set three.

 

Needing a victory in set four to force a deciding fifth game the Pack came out on fire jumping to a 6-1 lead and never looked back in winning 25-13.  Nevada hit .571 and held the previously hot hitting Aggies to a .136 attack percentage.  Freshman Erin Garvey gave the Pack the win with a kill off a set by senior Allison Hernandez.

 

With the match tied at two sets each the Pack used their moment from set four to propel them to victory in set five 15-10 to take the match 3-2.

 

For the second match of the invitational Harrington led the Pack with 17 kills and added nine digs.  Baldwin also reached double figures with 15 kills and Garvey totaled a career-high 10.  Libero Nicole Link topped the Pack with 11 digs and Sei tied for match high honors with 46 assists.

 

Renee Ibekwe posted a match-high 21 kills and added 13 digs to post a double-double for UCD.  Melanie Adams also reached double figures with 10 kills in the match.  Setter Carson Lowden tied Sei for match-high honors with 46 assists in the match. 

 

Nevada and Pepperdine play at 7:00 p.m. tonight the invitational title while UCD and Missouri play at 5:00 p.m. for third place.
