Wolf Pack Opens 2012 in Waco
Aug. 22, 2012
RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada volleyball team will open its 2012 season at the Fairfield Inn North Baylor Classic on Friday, taking on the Tulane Green Wave at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Baylor University.
"This is a very good first tournament for us," head coach Ruth Lawanson said. "I'm excited to see what the season will bring."
She stressed the growth of the Wolf Pack in the weeks of practice leading up to the season opener this weekend.
"As our first match approaches, there is no doubt we are moving in the right direction," Lawanson said. "As a coaching staff, we will have a better understanding of what we can improve on when we get home from the tournament."
Nevada returns five starters from a team that was 5-21 in its final season in the Western Athletic Conference in 2011, posting a 1-6 neutral site mark and a 2-7 road record. Two returners, Janelle Batista and Tessa Lea'ea, earned all-conference honors as middle blockers a season ago.
Tulane returns all six starters and 11 letterwinners from a 9-22 team a year ago. The 2011 Green Wave attack featured multiple players that saw time running the offense from the setter position, as well as a deep well of outside hitters.
The Pack will take on the host Baylor Bears at 10:30 a.m. and the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday to close out the event. Baylor was 18-14 in 2011, while Texas A&M CC finished with a 13-20 overall mark.
Lawanson added a note about the excitement her players have expressed knowing they will line up across from a team with a different jersey on for the first time this season.
"Honestly, we couldn't be more excited to play someone other than ourselves," she said.
