RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada (5-20, 2-11 WAC) volleyball team lost a Western Athletic Conference match, 3-1 to Utah State (12-15, 7-6 WAC) tonight at the Virginia Street Gym. The Wolf Pack dropped the first two sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-18. Following the break the Pack scored a 25-16 victory only to fall 25-10 in the fourth set.
The loss leaves the Pack 5-20 on the season and 2-11 in WAC play. The Aggies improved to 12-15 and 7-6 in the conference.
The first set was tied for the 12th time at 24-24 before USU scored the final two points to win 26-24. Freshman Bonnie Paul had six kills in the first set for Nevada. The Pack hit .179 and the Aggies .138.
USU jumped out early in the second set building a six point advantage at 12-6 and went on to claim the 25-18 victory to head to the locker room up two sets to none. Senior Erin Garvey had four kills in set two. The Pack hit .182 and USU 379.
After the break the Pack scored the first five points of the third set and never trailed in winning 25-16 to pull within a set at 2-1. Junior Elissa Ji had four kills in the set as the Pack hit .220 and held the Aggies to a .020 attack percentage.
Leading the fourth set 13-8 USU went on a 12-2 run to close the set 25-10 and the match 3-1. Ji had three kills in the final set. Nevada hit .negative .028 and the Aggies .519.
Ji and freshman Tessa Lea'ea had 12 kills each to lead the Wolf Pack. Setter Tatiana Santiago finished with a match-high 46 assists and added 10 digs to post a double-double. Ji also had a double-double as she totaled 12 digs to go along with her 12 kills. Libero Kelly Chang had 13 digs in the match.
Shay Sorensen led three Aggies players in double figures with 14 kills. Liz McArthur had 13 kills and Josselyn White added 10. McArthur posted a double-double as she totaled 10 digs. Setter Paige Neves also had a double-double for USU with 34 assists and 12 digs. Libero Ashlan Rogers finished the night with a match-high 16 digs.
USU totaled 12.5 blocks compared to seven for the Pack. Nevada hit .141 on the night and the Aggies .260.
Nevada concludes the season on Saturday hosting Idaho at noon. The Pack will recognize its three seniors prior to the match; Santiago, Garvey and Brittni Yates.
