LAS VEGAS - The University of Nevada (2-11, 0-1 MW) volleyball team dropped its Mountain West opener and the first Governor's Series presented by NV Energy competition of the season at UNLV (7-5, 2-0 MW) 3-0. The Rebels won by scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 25-17 to improve to 7-5 on the season and 2-0 on the Mountain West. The Wolf Pack dropped to 2-11 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
With the first set tied at 12 UNLV scored the next five points and did not trail in winning the close first set 25-21. There were three ties and three lead changes in set one. Junior Tessa Lea`ea had five kills and sophomore Sam Willoughby four. The Pack hit .190 and the Rebels .282.
UNLV held a 15-7 advantage in set two and went on to win 25-11 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Lea'ea had two kills but the Pack hit zero in the set. The Rebels hit .308.
Set three was tied five times and there was one lead change before UNLV won 25-17 to take the match 3-0. Willoughby had four kills and Lea'ea three. The Pack hit .062 and UNLV .300.
UNLV won the blocking battle in the match 7.5 to three. Donna Greely had two blocks for the Pack and Katlin Winters four for the Rebels. Nevada hit .098 on the night compared to .295 for the Rebels.
Lea'ea led the Pack with 10 kills and Willoughby added nine. Senior Dana Holt totaled 23 assists and fellow senior Grace Anxo led the team with 10 digs.
Sekola Falemaka posted a match-high 13 kills for the Rebels. Setter Stephanie Thelen had a match-high 28 assists. Allison Davies and Daryn Glenn finished with 14 and 12 digs respectively.
