BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Nevada (1-8) was swept by top ranked Cal (8-0) on Friday evening at the Hilton Garden Inn Classic by scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-12. The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 1-8 on the season while number one Cal improved to 8-0. Earlier in the day Nevada lost 3-1 to Sacramento State.
There were 12 ties and nine lead changes in the first set before the nation’s number one team escaped with the 26-24 victory. The Pack hit .241 in the first set and the Bears .325.
Set two was tied for the eighth time at 14-14 but Cal scored the next three points on the way to the 25-18 set win and 2-0 advantage in the match. The Pack hit just .030 and the Bears .143 in the set.
Cal dominated in the final set hitting .545 and holding the Wolf Pack to a .042 attack percentage in the 25-12 win to take the match 3-0.
Grace Anxo led Nevada with nine kills and setter Tatiana Santiago dished out 21 assists. Libero Kelly Chang totaled seven digs in the match.
Adrienne Gehan (13), Shannon Hawari (10) and Corey Johnson (10) tallied double figures in kills for the Bears. Setter Ely Barrett had 36 assists and Robin Rostratter 12 digs for Cal.
Nevada concludes play in the classic versus UT Arlington on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
