May 24, 2006
Reno, Nev. - The Nevada track team qualified eight student-athletes for the 2006 NCAA West Outdoor Regional which will take place in Provo, Utah on Friday, May 26 and Saturday, May 27. The Wolf Pack had five qualify in 2005.
The Pack will have five throwers participating in the event. Jamie Martino (shot put, discus), Caira Hane (hammer throw, javelin), Inger Appanaitis (javelin), Megan Lytle (javelin), and Janine Bodo (hammer throw) will all be representing Nevada. Appanaitis is third in the region right now in the javelin and 15th in the nation with her 51.63-meter mark. Hane is 12th in the region and 27th in the nation in the hammer (59.47-meter) and 13th in the region in the javelin 47.79-meter. The Pack will go into the regional with a great deal of experience under its belt. Appanaitis and Martino both qualified in 2005 and Bodo and Hane qualified in 2003 and 2004.
Sherena Smith and Ashley Mathis will represent Nevada's jumpers at the regional. Both qualified in the triple jump. This is the first time that either athlete has qualified for an outdoor regional.
Kali Baker will be making her third outdoor regional appearance. She qualified for both the 800-meter and the 1,500-meter. Baker won the 800-meter at the 2004 meet. She then finished 11th at the outdoor championships. Baker qualified for the finals in last years regionals, but could not compete due to injury. This rounds out an outstanding season for Baker. Baker shattered two Indoor WAC Championships Meet records finishing first in the 800-meter and the mile, was named Outstanding Performer at the WAC Indoor Championships and demolished three school records, two as an individual (800, mile) and one as a member of a relay (4 X 400).
The top-five finishers in each event will move on the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The west regional is one of four regionals held across the country.
