Track and Field Prepares for Big Performances at the Drake Relays

April 24, 2013

RENO, Nev.- On Friday, members of the University of Nevada track and field team will be traveling to Des Moines, Iowa for the Drake Relays, to test themselves against some of the best teams west of the Mississippi.

Looking to back up their record setting performance from last weekend in the 4x100 at the Mt. SAC Relays Nevada's standout relay team of Samantha Calhoun, Angelica Earls, Tanisha Hawkins, and Kashae Knox team will be back in action with a chance to add to their historic season.  The same group will compete in the 4x200 for the first time this season.  Nevada sprinters had a strong weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays last week with the 4x100 team setting a new school record and seniors Samantha Calhoun and Angelica Earls finished first and third respectively in the 100 meter dash.

Head coach Shantel Twiggs is excited for the meet this weekend and has some lofty expectations for her athletes.

"Our goal is to run 44 seconds this weekend in the 4x100, and with execution and never letting up it is within our reach."  With her athletes running the 4x200 for the first time of the season Coach Twiggs does not expect a school record but is excited for the race, "I believe we have a shot at running under 1:34 and finishing among the top three teams, but it will be fun and we plan to enjoy every minute."

Joining the sprinters at the Drake Relays will be Junior Kerri Simmons, who has already set the school record for shot put this season and has not finished worse than second in any meet this year. Senior La Tijera Avery, who holds the school record in the high jump, rounds out the group of athletes competing in Des Moines and she will be looking to reach the 6'0" mark for the first time of her career in her last meet before the Mountain West Championships.
