WHAT'S HAPPENING

The University of Nevada Track and Field team will open up the 2012 outdoor season Saturday at the Aggie Open in Davis, Calif.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH TWIGGS

“We are opening up this weekend hoping to put together some WAC leading and NCAA West Region worthy marks,” head coach Shantel Twiggs said. “We are red-shirting several of our top athletes this outdoor season, but we will not be without some amazing performances.”

“We are coming off of a record breaking indoor season in the sprints and jumps. This is an Olympic year, so several of our athletes have some pretty high goals and each week will be an opportunity to move one step closer to those goals."

INDOOR SEASON RECAP

The team had a solid indoor season where members of the team set personal best marks and broke program records. Angelica Earls finished the Boise State Team Challenge with a new school record in the 60m and 200m events. Earls recorded a 7.45 in the 60m and 24.38 in the 200m. Deborah Amoah also performed well at the challenge, finishing  with two top 10 Nevada performances, two first place finishes, and two personal best marks in the 60m hurdles (8.69) and triple jump (12.35m).

Samantha Diaz climbed Nevada’s all-time list in the mile event. Diaz posted a personal best time of 4:42.46 at the Husky Classic in Seattle to sit at second on the program’s list. Freshman Kashae Knox had a strong performance at the University of Washington invitational, recording a 7.52in the 60m that placed her second behind Earls on the program’s all-time list.

Senior La Tijera Avery had an outstanding indoor season, which culminated with an invite to the NCAA Indoor Championships that begin Friday. The senior followed up a first place finish at the WAC Indoor Championships with a record breaking performance at the University of Washington Final Qualifier. Avery cleared a school record mark of 1.83 m in Seattle to qualify for a spot in the NCAA Championships. The mark also tied Avery for seventh best in the country.
