Senior La Tijera Avery will represent the University of Nevada’s Track and Field team at the NCAA 2012 Indoor Championships this week. Avery will participate in the high jump event Friday 8 p.m. at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho.
Avery has had a very successful 2012 campaign, including three first place finishes in earlier meets this season. The senior followed up a first place finish at the WAC Indoor Championships with a record breaking performance at the University of Washington Final Qualifier. Avery cleared a school record mark of 1.83 m in Seattle to qualify for a spot in the NCAA Championships. The mark also tied Avery for seventh best in the country.
“I am very proud and excited for the opportunity La Tijera has this week,” head coach Shantel Twiggs said. “She has worked extremely hard and is deserving of her chance to be among the nation’s best.”
Avery is the third female Nevada track and field athlete to make the Indoor National Championships (Miranda Brownson 2004-All-America, Kali Baker 2006). and the highest ranked going into the events.
"La Tijera has matured and grown over the past four years as an athlete and as a person. She is a two year captain and I can’t think of a better way to end your senior season."
