Pate Gets Track & Field off to Strong Start at WAC Championship





HONOLULU, Hawaii  - The University of Nevada saw its first competition at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Tuesday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Track Complex.  The meet began with the first four events of the heptathlon, with three of Nevada's athletes competing in the multi-event. 

Wolf Pack junior April Pate leads heptathlon with 3,277 points over Louisiana Tech's Jesseka Jones at 3,250.  Pate is on track to have one of her best performances in the event after tallying personal-best marks in the 100 meter hurdles (14.11), shot put (41'8.75") and 200 meters (24.93).

Sarah Nichols is currently in seventh with 2,943 points after also ending the day with a personal-best in the 200 meters at 25.93.  Nichols should make a big impact tomorrow as her best event, the javelin, will be the second of the day Wednesday.  Alexa Anderson is in 11th with 2,599 points.

The pentathlon will conclude tomorrow after the long jump, javelin and 800 meters all beginning at 1:30 p.m. (HT).
