Nevada Men and Women on the Road This Week

Oct. 10, 2012

RENO, Nev. -- The University of Nevada men’s and women’s tennis teams will both be in action this weekend, as the women will compete in the 2012 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas, from Wednesday-Saturday and the men travel to Santa Barbara for the UCSB Invitational from Friday-Sunday.

The women’s team enters the ITA Regional Championships, coming off its appearance at the Cal Nike Invitational. Among the teams it faces this weekend are Mountain West foes Air Force, Boise State, UNLV, and Wyoming.

Junior Michelle Okhremchuk leads the team with two singles victories and two doubles wins with partner Emma Verberne. Sophie Stevens, Sheila Smiley, and Caroline Konigsfeldt each have a singles victory.

The men will face a few familiar foes from their last event, the UC Davis Aggie Fall Invitational, including UC Davis and California, but will also face Cal Poly, Westmont, University of California San Diego, and host University of California Santa Barbara.

“We are coming off of a strong weekend of success and will try to continue with improvement in a strong field at the UCSB Invitational,” men’s tennis head coach William Burton said.  “We will really keep tabs on our players this week to have a great push into Regionals in Vegas.”

The men will compete in their matches at the regional event next weekend, also in Las Vegas. Junior team captain Victor Ouvrard will lead the men’s team into Santa Barbara, Calif., having gathered four singles wins last weekend. After a loss in his opening match, he won four straight, including a singles A Flight Consolation Finals victory.

Ouvrard and doubles partner Fernando Sunago earned three doubles victories in a similar style, dropping their first match, but rebounding to win the Doubles A Consolation flight title.

Junior Philip Hinojosa, sophomore Moez Echargui, and newcomer Andrew Poustie each had three singles victories in Davis. As a team, Echargui and Poustie earned two doubles wins, falling in the semifinal match in the A Doubles flight.
