COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Hunter Nicholas has been named Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while Nevada senior Emma Verberne has been selected the MW Women's Tennis Player of the Week for competition from Feb. 14-18. It is the first MW weekly honor for both student-athletes this season.
Verberne, from Rotterdam, Netherlands, was 5-1 last week as the Wolf Pack lost 4-3 to Idaho on Feb. 15 and 5-2 to Washington State on Feb. 16, before topping Montana 6-1 on Feb. 17. In the No. 2 singles position, Verberne stopped Almudena Sanz of Idaho, 6-4, 6-2. She also won straight set matches against Ksenia Googe of Washington State (6-1, 6-3) and Haley Driver of Montana (6-2, 6-3). Along with partner, Michelle Okhremchuk, Verberne won two matches at No. 1 doubles. Verbene and Okhremchuk topped Idaho's Constance Alexander and Almudena Sanz, 8-1. They also defeated Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina of Washington State, 8-2.
This is the first player of the week achievement this year for Verberne, and is the second in her career. (Earned P.O.W. in WAC 2011)
