Mizyuk Named WAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

DENVER Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of February 5. This is the first honor for the Wolf Pack freshman this spring.

Mizyuk, a freshman from Volgodonsk, Russia, went undefeated in singles and doubles play last week as the Wolf Pack beat No. 56 Washington State and Portland in Pullman, Wash. Playing out of the No. 1 position, Mizyuk knocked off the No. 85-ranked player, Ekaterina Burduli, of Washington State in straight sets to highlight Nevada’s win.  She teamed with Carolina Bailly to win the No. 1 doubles match, 8-1. Against Portland, Mizyuk lost just two games in winning the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-2. Again, teaming with Bailly, she won her doubles match, 8-2.

Other women’s tennis nominees: Boise State’s Jana Mackova won  three singles matches for the Broncos last week ... Fresno State’s Melanie Gloria went undefeated in singles and doubles play last week ... Utah State’s Courtney Anderson is up two positions since last season and is 3-0 at the No. 1 position this season.
