LAS VEGAS -- The University of Nevada Women’s tennis team posted five wins after rain delays in Las Vegas during the first two rounds of the ITA Mountain Region Women’s Tennis Championships on Wednesday.
With more rain in the forecast for tomorrow, the Wolf Pack earned three first round singles victories, including one from junior Michelle Okhremchuk. She cruised to victory over Hilary Walters-West of Northern Colorado in the opening round 6-0, 6-1.
Seniors Emma Verberne and Sophie Stevens also earned singles victories in the opening round. Verberne defeated Laura Theus of Idaho State 6-0, 6-1 while Stevens overcame Silviya Zhelyazkova of Wyoming 6-4, 6-0.
In the first round of doubles competition, Okhremchuk and Verberne defeated UNLV’s Ella Bouchier and Anett Ferenczi-Bako 8-2.
Stevens and Sheila Smiley also earned a win in their first round doubles match against the team of Sammie Watson and Teal Vosburgh of Mountain West foe Boise State.
Play continues again tomorrow for the Wolf Pack in Las Vegas, as the second round of singles flights continue in the morning, followed by doubles competition in the afternoon.
