BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of Nevada women's tennis team could not continue its success at the Cal-Nike Invitational, grabbing only two victories on day two in Berkeley.
Though the Pack had two singles victories on the day, it had four players with quarterfinal match ups on Saturday. Despite pushing the matches down to the wire, Nevada was victorious only once in those matches. Still, head coach Guillaume Tonelli is happy with how the team has preformed to start the year.
"We are very proud of our first tournament and how we competed," he said. "We can tell we are already improving and getting better."
The lone Quarterfinal victory came from Juliette Legendre, as she was victorious in her White Singles Consolations draw. She disposed of Justine Delaval of .. in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Monika Magusiak dropped her quarterfinal match in the same draw after a grueling three-set battle, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0(8). Had she been victorious, she would have met Legendre in the Semifinals.
Sheila Smiley seized the other victory in her round robin match against Tiffany Pham of UC Davis, as she rolled to a straight set victory 6-4, 6-2.
Day three at the Cal-Nike Invitational continues on Sunday at 10 a.m. with doubles play.
