RENO, Nev. – In a back-and-forth contest at Caughlin Club on Saturday, the University of Nevada women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Utah State.
The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 6-10 (0-3 WAC), while Utah State improved to 10-9 (2-2 WAC).
Nevada started strong, taking the doubles point with three victories to take a 1-0 lead.
Utah State fought back on the singles courts, getting four victories to take the contest. Three big wins for the Aggies came at the bottom of the singles lineup, where they swept matches 4-6.
Nevada’s victories in singles play came from Emma Verberne and Sophie Stevens. Verberne beat Jaci West in three sets at the second position. She won 6-3, 2-6 and 10-6 in a 10-point tiebreaker. The win was the fifth in a row for the junior from Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Stevens won in straight sets at No. 3 for her 15th overall win and ninth in dual play.
Nevada will close out its regular season when it takes on No. 58 Hawai’i at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday at Caughlin Club. The match had originally been scheduled for 9:30 a.m., but has been moved back one hour.
