Nevada tops UNLV for first time in 12 years
April 6, 2014
RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada women's tennis team was victorious on Sunday, bouncing rival UNLV by a score of 4-3.
The Wolf Pack (11-7, 2-1 MW) pulled out an important win over the Rebels (9-9, 2-2 MW) on Sunday, as Nevada beat UNLV for the first time in 12 years. The victory moved Nevada to 2-1 in Mountain West play, while also improving the Pack's home mark to 6-2. The win also ensured Nevada at least a split of three "Governors Series Presented by NV Energy" points, which will be awarded at the end of the season due to the possibility of meeting in the Mountain West tournament. Nevada opened the day by going 2-for-3 in doubles play to snatch the early point, and closed the day by finishing 3-for-6 in singles play.
"I think this is the biggest confidence booster, and it kind of showed us the potential we have," said Sheila Smiley, Nevada women's tennis player. "We were trying to prove that you're in our territory, they've never come here. This is our house, and you're not going to win easily, this was super important."
Nevada took the crucial doubles point to begin the day, which proved to be the decisive point in the match. The day started on court two, where Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley topped Anett Ferenczi-Bako and Kamelia Dimitrova by a score of 8-3. The point was clinched on court one, as Michelle Okhremchuk and Sheila Morales bounced Lucia Batta and Santa Shumilina by a score of 8-4.
Nevada increased its lead early with two quick victories to make the match 3-0. Despite battling an illness, Okhremchuk was able to knock off No. 58 Lucia Batta on court one for the first singles victory in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Smiley took the second win, as she ousted Iren Kotseva, also by a score of 6-2, 6-3. A UNLV comeback fell short after the Lady Rebs made the match 3-2, when Legendre shut the door by stopping Dimitrova, 7-6(7-1), 6-3.
The Wolf Pack will be in action again in exactly one week on April 13, when it hosts Fresno State for senior day at the Wolf Pack's home courts of Caughlin Athletic Club beginning at 11 am.
