Nevada Swimming and Diving Set to Open Season Friday

Oct. 13, 2011

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada swimming and diving team will open its season at the George Haines Invitational this weekend, competing on both Friday and Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif.

The annual event is hosted by Stanford University and will feature Nevada competing with the Cardinal, as well as San Jose State and Hawai’i.

Each day will see the Pack competing against each of the other three teams in a true Invitational setting. Points will be totalled Saturday to determine a winner.

Last year Nevada was sixth at the Western Athletic Conference Championships and posted a 3-7 dual-meet record.

Tuning up for competition, the Pack hosted its annual Silver and Blue Scrimmage last Friday. Mengjiao Mi won three individual events to lead the Silver team to a 117-115 victory. Mi won the 100, 200 and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Diver Grace Huang was a double winner for the Silver squad taking first in the 1 and 3-meter divining events.

Two other members of the Silver squad, Gabby Guieb in the 100-yard butterfly and Ashley Kunz in the 100-yard breaststroke, swam to first place finishes.
