RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada swimming and diving team will hold its intrasquad meet at the Lombardi Pool on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The meet is free and open to the public.
Second-year head coach Abby Steketee will use the Silver and Blue Intrasquad meet to prepare the Wolf Pack for the season which gets underway Oct. 25 when Pacific comes to Reno. The team is comprised of 18 swimmer and four divers this season.
“There are several purposes for the intrasquad meet – introduce the freshmen to the format of collegiate dual meets, establish benchmark times for the season, and identify specific areas to target in our next phase of training,” head coach Abby Steketee said. “With a captain at the head of each team, the intrasquad meet is also a chance to build leadership skills. Our coaching staff challenges the upperclassmen and captains with a lot of responsibility in the intrasquad. We want them to learn how to contribute in meets beyond just swimming fast in their events. We’re looking for a high-intensity environment in which the ladies support and push each other. Overall, we’re still in our fitness phase of training, but the team is very excited to compete.”
Heading the list of returners is sophomore Yawen Li who set a pair of school records last season in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. Junior Luzia Vieira also returns after a strong sophomore season a year ago.
Veteran coach Jian Li You returns for her 18th season directing the Pack divers in 2013-14. In year one of Nevada competing in the Mountain West, You was named the Diving Coach of the Year after Stephanie Hansen was named MW Diver of the Year. Hansen returns for her senior season this year along with three additional veteran divers.
