Johnson, Steketee Win Give Back Like Jack Awards

May 20, 2013

RENO, Nev. - Wolf Pack women's basketball student-athlete Aja Johnson and women's swimming and diving coach Abby Steketee are the winners of the University of Nevada's 2012-13 Give Back Like Jack Community Service Awards.

Nevada Athletics presents its Give Back Like Jack Community Service Awards annually to the student-athlete and staff member who best exemplify the dedication to community service that was the hallmark of longtime Reno and Sparks philanthropist Jack Reviglio's life. Wolf Pack men's basketball student-athlete Keith Fuetsch and women's basketball coach Jane Albright were the winners of the inaugural Give Back Like Jack awards in 2012.

"Aja and Abby are very deserving candidates of the Give Back Like Jack Awards, and both share the commitment the Reviglio family has to making our community a better place," Nevada Director of Athletics Doug Knuth said. "It is so important to give back to the people of northern Nevada who support our student-athletes, teams and athletics department so much, and Aja and Abby both exemplify that giving spirit."

An Oakland, Calif., native who just completed her sophomore year on the Wolf Pack women's basketball team, Johnson participated in 47 hours of community service in the 2012-13 school year. She spent over 20 hours of volunteering in the Child Life department at Reno Hospital, assisting in the program and interacting with patients in the children's hospital. She was also involved in events at Edgewood Place Nursing Home, the President's Tailgate, the Hoops and Treats Halloween event and basketball clinics at Clayton Middle School and Warner Elementary School.

Steketee has dedicated herself to serving the community from the time she started as head coach of the Wolf Pack swimming and diving team last July. She and her team volunteered at the Reno Balloon Races, the Silver State water polo tournament, Animal Ark, the Tough Mudder and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. She also participated in Reading Week and a career fair at Vaughn Middle School and ran a team pen-pal exchange with children at Mt. Rose Elementary School.

Johnson and Steketee will each receive a plaque commemorating the honor, while a plaque showing the names of all of the winners is displayed prominently in the Hall of Champions at Legacy Hall.
