INDIANAPOLIS – University of Nevada senior swimmer Mengjiao Mi began her NCAA Championships with a 34th place finish in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday.
She came in with a time of 4:45.49.The Beijing, China native will swim two more times in Indianapolis, in the 200 free on Friday and the 1,650 free on Saturday. Mi’s time is the second fastest in the history of the program, and was just shy of a personal best.
“I was very proud of her poise and determination,” head coach Abby Steketee said about Mi. “She was last in her heat at the midpoint but fought back to finish fourth.”
Mi was originally seeded 39th, improving by five positions in the final standings. Preliminary races for the remaining events are scheduled for 11 a.m., with the finals set to begin at 7 p.m. each night.
