NEWS OF THE DAY

SATURDAY, MAY 17
It was a wild and long day at Easton Stadium, but the Nevada softball team ended it in the early morning hours with a 2-1 victory over Purdue (box score) and is now in the championship game of the NCAA Regional. Nevada fell into the losers' bracket with a tough, tough loss to UCLA earlier in the day. The Wolf Pack had a 4-3 lead with two outs in the seventh inning and was one out away from victory. But the Bruins tied it and sent the game to extra innings and Nevada eventually suffered a 6-4 loss (box score).

The day was physically and mentally draining as Nevada arrived at the park at 12:30 p.m. and did not get back to its hotel until 1:30 a.m. Everyone was able to get some sleep at that point, except for team manager Jessica Haight. With the prospect of two more games (one for sure) on Sunday, Haight had to get the team's uniforms into the laundry and ready for Sunday.

FRIDAY, MAY 16
Nevada captured its first NCAA Regional victory today with a 4-1 win over Purdue. Britton Murdock hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Katie Holverson was brilliant in the circle for the Pack. Here's the box score.

After the game, Nevada went to eat and then returned to watch UCLA, the host school and top seed in the Regional, come back to beat Cal State Fullerton 8-3. Nevada will face the Bruins on Saturday in the winners' bracket game at 3 p.m. The winner advances to Sunday's championship. Thirty minutes after the conclusion of that game, Purdue and Cal State Fullerton will play in the loser's bracket game. The third game of the day Saturday will be the loser of the first game against the winner of the second game.

For more on Friday's victory, take a look at the photo album. Also, Kristin Stith has a new blog entry (see above for link).

THURSDAY, MAY 15
The Wolf Pack softball program saw yet another first this season as three Nevada players landed spots on the NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-West Region teams. Freshman catcher Noelle Micka made the first team while senior outfield Vanessa Briones and sophomore pitcher Katie Holverson received spots on the second team.

To catch up on the Wolf Pack, take a look at the weekly notes package.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 14
Nevada arrived in Los Angeles this evening after a (quick!) nonstop flight from Reno. A big difference between this trip and another for the Wolf Pack this year is the fact that the players don't have the stress of school to focus on as finals at the university ended on Tuesday.

Team headquarters for this week is the gorgeous Courtyard Los Angeles Westside, which re-opened today after a large-scale renovation.

Senior Kristin Stith is excited to keep her postseason blog going and she has the first entry of the week.
