RENO, Nev. - What looked like what might be a close game following a 1-1 tie in the first turned out to be a 10-1 victory for Fresno State as the Bulldogs completed a three-game sweep of Nevada here Saturday in WAC softball action at Idlewild Park.
The two exchanged runs in the first but Fresno State (38-10, 14-1 WAC) exploded for five runs in the second and then added two each in the third and fifth to cruise to a 10-1 affair in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Jamie Southern picked up the win (24-3) and was 2-3 with an RBI. Christina Clark was 4-4 with three RBI, including her 14th home run of the season and a double. Leticia Pacheco was 3-3 with an RBI, Nichole Willis was 2-3 with two RBI and Kristin Sylvester was 1-4 with two RBI to lead the Bulldogs.
Nevada's bright spots were Kristin Stith and Tyler Schafer, who both went 2-3. Candice Rainwater was 1-2 with an RBI single in the first inning, as well. Jordan McPherson took the loss (11-11) in registering her third straight defeat.
Fresno State used seven hits and one Nevada error to score five in the second in breaking the game wide open. They finished the game with 16 hits while Nevada managed seven hits but could only muster one run. Each team had one error in the game.
The Pack (22-28, 8-7 WAC) now conclude the season at Tulsa next Friday night (single-game) and Saturday afternoon (double-header) for a three-game WAC series. Fresno State, who clinched the WAC title with Saturday's win, hosts UTEP next weekend to conclude their regular-season.
