RENO, Nev. The Nevada softball team reeled off its fifth and sixth straight victories with a doubleheader sweep over Louisiana Tech on Friday at Hixson Park.
Vanessa Briones clubbed two home runs and Kelsey Starr homered and drove in five as Nevada improved to 34-14 overall and 12-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Lady Techsters fell to 29-25 and 7-9 in the WAC.
Nevada won game one 8-7 behind Starr’s five RBI performance and a complete game effort from Kate Holverson, who improved to 17-5 overall and 7-0 in WAC games. Starr went 3-for-3, including a three-run home run. Briones continued her torrid hitting as she went 3-for-4 with three runs and RBI, including a home run. Nevada had 14 hits in the game.
Holverson struck out eight and walked just one. She gave up seven runs but only two were earned.
In game two, Nevada exploded for 16 hits in the 12-2 victory in five innings. The Wolf Pack blasted four home runs, including another one from Briones, who is now batting .486 with four homers and 14 RBI in WAC play. Brittany Puzey, Sam Bias and Danielle Patrick also homered for the Pack.
Nevada’s first four hitters Noelle Micka, Puzey, Briones and Britton Murdock combined to go 9-for-13 with seven RBI and eight runs in the game.
Jordan McPherson started and got the victory. She struck out eight and walked just one in improving to 12-9 on the year.
Nevada and Louisiana Tech will conclude the three-game series with a single game Saturday at Hixson Park. The game is Senior Day as Nevada will honor its five seniors before the game.
