Nevada Sweeps Utah Valley State, 7-1

April 17, 2005

RENO, Nev. - Nevada (18-21) relied on the hot bat of Candice Rainwater and the junior responded in the circle, as well, with a complete-game, one-run victory as Nevada swept Utah Valley State (10-31-1) here Sunday in a three-game series, 7-1.

The Pack hit three home runs and scattered seven hits in allowing just one run. Rainwater had her fourth home run of the weekend and finished with 12 RBI in the three games as she went 2-4 with three RBI and pitched seven innings in allowing just one run and scattering seven hits to improve to 5-6 on the year. The junior from Dana Point, Calif., was 5-11 with four home runs (including a grand slam in game two Saturday to end the game) and had 12 RBI in leading Nevada to three wins this weekend. Rainwater now has a .344 BA with six HR's and a team-leading 25 RBI with a team-best (tie) 42 hits.

The Pack won both games Saturday on the eight-run rule and nearly did it again Sunday in the 7-1 victory.

Jiliane Hartfiel was 2-4 with an RBI and Kari Stockstill went 2-2 with an RBI while Kaycee Wilcks continued her hot hitting with a 2-3 day today. Also hitting home runs today were Stockstill and Kristin Stith, their third and fourth, respectively, of the season.

Nevada scored twice in the first and that would prove to be enough as Hartfiel singled home Cindy Elkins, who led off with a double and Rainwater doubled home Hartfiel. The Pack would add three in the third and two in the sixth. UVSC scored their lone run in the third.

Nevada hosts UTEP Friday afternoon for a WAC double-header and again Saturday for a single-game, both days starting at 2 p.m. Next Sunday features top-25 power Washington here for a 1 p.m. double-header, just added to the schedule to help make up for some lost games due to rain earlier in the year.

Admissions to Nevada softball at Idlewild Park is free.
