Nevada Splits Two Games At Own Tournament

RENO, Nev. - Nevada (12-18) split two games in its own tournament here at Idlewild Park Friday during the first of a three-day, four-team tournamentosing a heart-breaker 8-7 to Pacific and then downing Utah Valley State 4-1.
McNeese State won both their games, beating Utah Valley State 5-1 and Pacific 13-5. Pacific split their two games while Utah Valley State went 0-2.
Against Pacific, the Pack fell behind 1-0 in the first but erupted for five runs in the third to lead 5-1. Pacific scored twice in the third to make it 5-3 and then added three in the fifth and two in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Nevada scored twice in the seventh but couldn't tie it to send it into extra innings.
Jordan McPherson took the loss (4-5) and Natalie King picked up the win for the Tigers. Brittany Lorenzen hit her fourth home run of the year, a three run shot in the third. Jiliane Hartfiel was 3-3 with two RBI and Kaycee Wilcks was 2-3 to lead Nevada. Jennifer Curtier was 3-4 with five RBI including two home runs.
In Nevada's second game, they easily dispatched Utah Valley State 4-1. The Pack stuck with Tiffany Hoeft (3-6), who went the distance in allowing just three hits and one run, unearned. Lorenzen was 3-4 with an RBI to lead the Pack offensively.
Nevada scored one in the first, two in the third and in in the sixth and gave up the lone run in the top of the seventh for the 4-1 victory.
Pacific and Utah Valley State will play at 9 am and Nevada will face McNeese State at 11:15 am. Teams ranked one and four will play at 1:30 and teams in second and third will play at 3:45 pm to conclude Saturday's four-game slate.
The two teams with the best tournament records will play for the championship Sunday at 11:15 am while the two teams with the worst tournament records will play prior to the title game at 9 am in the consolation contest. Admission to Nevada softball at Idlewild Park is free.
