Softball Beats NMSU; Moves to 5-1 in WAC

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Vanessa Briones went 2-for-2 with three RBI as the Nevada softball team beat New Mexico State 7-5 on Sunday at NMSU Softball Park.

The victory gives Nevada a win in the season series and moves the Wolf Pack to 26-13 overall and 5-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Briones collected all three RBI with a double in Nevada’s five-run second inning as the Pack jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Briones later scored in the inning on a ground ball from Tyler Schafer and Schafer scored on a groundout by Noelle Micka.

NMSU got three runs back in the third inning but Nevada added runs in the fifth and sixth innings and never relinquished the lead.

Jordan McPherson (10-8) came on in relief to pick up the victory. The senior pitched 4.1 innings, giving up six hits and just two runs while striking out three without walking a batter.

Junior outfielder Brittany Puzey knocked in Sarah Hunt with a ground ball in the sixth inning to give Puzey her 104th career RBI. She is now tied with Candice Rainwater (2003-06) for most career RBI in Nevada history. Puzey reached the top of the record list in 163 games while Rainwater set the mark in 206 games.

Nevada returns to action on Thursday with a single game at Pacific. The Wolf Pack will remain on the road with a three-game series at Fresno State on Friday and Saturday.
