Softball Knocks Off #23 Fresno State, Takes Game Three of Series

FRESNO, Calif. - Nevada's softball team improved to 1-2 in WAC play Saturday with a 2-1 victory over #23 Fresno State in Fresno, Calif. The Pack is now 12-21 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when Nevada shortstop Brittany Lorenzen (Henderson, Nev.) smashed a solo homerun over the centerfield fence to put the Pack up 1-0.
With one out in the fifth, Nevada loaded the bases on a walk by Katie Stith (Chino Hills, Calif.) and singles from Amanda Wise (Galt, Calif.) and Kymberly Silagyi (Chino, Calif.). But, Fresno pitcher Robin Mackin struck out the next two Nevada batters to end the inning.
Nevada loaded the bases again in the sixth on singles from Stith and Sarah Hunt (Reno, Nev.) and Candice Rainwater (Dana Point, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice. Mackin's wild pitch to Kari Stockstill (Huntington Beach, Calif.) allowed Rainwater to score from third and gave the Pack a 2-0 lead.
Fresno scored its only run of the game in the sixth inning when Kristin Sylvester hit an RBI single to right field and scored Haley Perkins to cut the lead to 2-1.
Jordan McPherson (Simi Valley, Calif.) threw a complete game three-hitter allowing just one run (earned) and striking out three. Bulldog pitcher Robin Mackin gave up eight hits, two runs (both earned) and struck out nine in seven innings of work.
Hunt and Lorenzen each finished the game with a game-high two hits. They both finished the day 2-3. Haley Perkins led the Bulldogs with two hits.
Nevada hosts Sacramento State Tuesday in a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m. at Idlewild Park.
