Softball Loses Both Ends of Doubleheader at #23 Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. - Nevada opened conference play Friday night with a doubleheader against #23 Fresno State. Nevada fell in the first game 6-1 and lost the second game 2-1. With the losses the Pack falls to 11-21 overall and 0-2 in Western Athletic Conference play.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Bulldog Christina Clark hit a triple to right field. The next batter, Haley Perkins, hit a single to right field to score Clark from third and give Fresno a 1-0 lead.

Nevada tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Brittany Lorenzen (Henderson, Nev.) hit a solo homerun over the left field fence.

Fresno increased its lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and runners on first and second, Perkins hit a ball to Nevada third baseman Sara Hunt (Reno, Nev.) Hunt overthrew first which allowed Garvin to score from second. Nevada walked Fresno's next batter, Merryann Barr, to load the bases with two outs but the Pack got out of the inning as Kristin Sylvester grounded out to third.

Fresno State loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth on singles from Nicole Willis, Jenna Cervantez and Ashley White. Garvin reached on a fielder's choice to score Kartina Jacques, who pinch ran for Willis. Clark then reached second on a Nevada error which scored White and Cervantez and put Fresno up 5-1. Gavin scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Perkins to give Fresno a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Nevada committed three errors in the inning and four in the game.

Jordan McPherson (Simi Valley, Calif.) threw 5.1 innings for Nevada striking out 10 batters. She gave up six hits and six runs (two earned). Tiffany Hoeft (Redding, Calif.) replaced McPherson and pitched 0.2 innings. Fresno pitcher Robin Mackin threw a complete game for the Dogs. She allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out 14.


In the second game of the doubleheader, Fresno struck in the bottom of the first. Clark led off the inning with a double to right field. Sylvester followed with an RBI double to give Fresno the early 1-0 advantage.

The Dogs threatened in the bottom of the second when they loaded the bases on singles by White and Perkins and a walk by Clark. But, Barr grounded out to Hunt to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Perkins led off with a double down the left field line and scored on Sylvester's single to put Fresno up 2-0. Nevada cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning when Cindy Elkins (Reno, Nev.) hit a solo homerun to centerfield. But, the Pack couldn't get another run as the Bulldogs took the second game 2-1.

McPherson pitched a complete game for the Pack allowing seven hits, two runs (both earned) while striking out three. Fresno pitchers Barr and Mackin allowed a combined four hits and nine strikeouts.

Nevada will play Fresno tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the final game of the series.
