Nevada vs. #25 Cal


HONOLULU, Hawai`i The University of Nevada softball team’s rally in the bottom of the seventh came up short as the Pack fell 3-1 to #25 Cal at the Bank of Hawai`i Invitational Friday night.  With the loss, Nevada fell to 7-16 while the Bears improved to 21-11.


Down 3-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Michelle Beach (Fallon, Nev.) hit a one-out single to centerfield.  Sophomore Sarah Hunt (Reno, Nev.) came in for Beach as a pinch runner and Hunt advanced to second on senior Amanda Wise’s (Galt, Calif.) single.  Junior Tyler Schafer’s (Starr, Idaho) single loaded the bases and sophomore Kym Silagyi (Chino, Calif.) reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Hunt.  With two outs and runners on first and second, sophomore Brittany Puzey (Minden, Nev.) hit a deep fly ball to leftfield but Cal's Gina Leomiti ran the ball down and made the catch for the final out of the game. 


The Bears scored all three of its runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Julie Meyer and Alex Sutton hit a two-run double after a Nevada error to score Taylor Kelly and Meyer. 


Nevada ended the game with nine hits, including two by Wise, while Cal finished with seven.


Junior Jordan McPherson (Simi Valley, Calif.) threw a complete game for Nevada allowing seven hits, one earned run and a season-high nine strikeouts.  Bears pitcher Marissa Drewrey earned the win for Cal throwing seven innings, allowing nine hits while striking out four. 



Nevada vs. #23/25 Hawai`i


HONOLULU, Hawai`i The University of Hawai’i scored 16 runs on 13 hits to beat the University of Nevada softball team 16-0 in five innings at the Bank of Hawai`i Invitational Friday night in Honolulu


The Rainbow Wahine scored four runs in the second and added six in both the fifth and sixth innings. Nevada committed a season-high five errors which lead to five Hawai`i runs.   


The Pack ended the game with two hits by junior Tyler Schafer (Starr, Idaho) and sophomore Kym Silagyi (Chino, Calif.). 


Senior Tiffany Hoeft-Bass (Redding, Calif.) took the loss for Nevada.  She threw 3 2/3 innings for the Pack, giving up eight hits and five earned runs.  Junior Jordan McPherson (Simi Valley, Calif.) pitched the final 1 1/3 inning for Nevada allowing five hits and six earned runs. 


Third-seeded Nevada will face Hawai`i, the two seed, today in bracket play of the Hawai`i Invitational.  The winner of today’s 1 p.m. PT game, will play in the championship game tonight at 7 p.m. PT, while the loser will play in the third place game tonight at 5 p.m. PT.
