Nevada Downs Hawai`i, 3-1

HOMOLULU - The Wolf Pack defeated Hawai`i, 3-1, in the final game of a three game Western Athletic Conference series Tuesday night. With the win, Nevada improved to 10-14 and 2-1 in the WAC, and taking the Hawai`i series, 2-1.
Nevada started where they left off Monday night, continuing their pattern of scoring one run in each of the three games' first innings. Kari Elkins led off the game with a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to rightfield by Candice Rainwater.
The Wolf Pack added another run in the top third when Jiliane Hartfiel walked to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a Rainwater single to the outfield to extend the lead to 2-0. Nevada tacked on another run in the fourth, capitalizing on two hits and a UH error. Tyler Schafer scored on a single by Brittany Lorenzen. Nevada had at least five batters come to the plate in every inning except for the fifth and sixth, and left 10 runners on base.
Hawai`i chipped away in the bottom of the fourth when Kaulana Gould started the inning off with a sharp single to left field. Singles by Tyleen Tausaga and Kristi Yoshizawa loaded the bases, and Gould scored on a fielding error by the second baseman off a Noelle Izumi ground ball.
Gould was the only UH player with multiple hits. She went 2-3 with a double and a run scored.
Hartfiel was also 2-3 with a run scored, Rainwater drove in two runs, and Kristin Stith hit a double to rightfield.
On the mound, Wolf Pack pitcher Jordan McPherson frustrated Hawai`i hitters most of the night, retiring the first eight and last seven in a row. She threw the complete game, giving up one run on five hits, walking none and striking out three.
Melissa Coogan started for UH but left after 2.1 innings, giving way to Paula Blanning who finished the game. Coogan gave up two runs on four hits with two walks and one strike out. Blanning threw 4.2 innings allowing one run on four hits, striking out five and walking none.
