Darby Named WAC Pitcher of the Week

DENVER Hawaii’s Tanisha Milca and Nevada’s Mallary Darby have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 23-March 1. This is the first honor of the season for Milca and the second of her career. This is Darby’s first career honor and the second honor for a Nevada player this season.

Milca, a senior outfielder from Kailua, Oahu (Kailua), led the Rainbow Wahine to the Bank of Hawaii Invitational title after scoring at least one run in each game. She hit .750 (6-of-8), had a 1.250 slugging percentage and a .833 on-base percentage with a team-high seven runs scored, 10 total bases and four walks. She hit her first career grand slam, the 26th home run of her career, which moves her into sixth place all-time in UH softball history. Her six RBI against Mount St. Mary’s was also a career high and one short of the school single-game RBI record. In the bottom of the sixth inning in the first game against Mount St. Mary’s, Milca sparked Hawaii with a leadoff single and later scored the winning run in a tight 2-0 win over the Mountaineers.

Darby, a freshman from Sparks, Nev. (Spanish Springs), went 3-0 in three starts with a 0.33 ERA, including two complete game shutouts. She struck out 26 and walked seven while giving up just one run in 21.0 innings of work. All three of her starts were complete games. She opened the week with a 4-1 win over Sacramento State, striking out 11 batters. At the DeMarini Invitational over the weekend, Darby shut out Minnesota (5-0) and Oregon State (3-0). For the week, she yielded just two extra-base hits.
