Nevada vs. Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. The University of Nevada softball team fell to tournament host Santa Barbara 4-0 on Friday morning in the Pack’s first game of the Softball by the Beach Invitational. The Wolf Pack fell to 0-6 this season while the Gauchos improved to 3-2.
Santa Barbara scored all of their runs in the first inning as the Gauchos scored four runs on three hits. Santa Barbara players Tiffany Wright and Jennifer Davis accounted for the Gauchos’ three RBI of the inning. The Pack committed two errors during the first inning and ended the game with three.
Nevada was unable to get a hit until the fourth inning when junior Tyler Schafer (Starr, Idaho) hit a single to centerfield. The hit extended Schafer’s hit streak to six games, tying her career high. However, the Pack’s next two batters were unable to get on base and Santa Barbara got out of the inning.
The Pack’s only other hit of the game came in the sixth inning when freshman Sam Bias (Oakley, Calif.) hit a two-out single to centerfield.
Freshman pitcher Katie Holverson (Anthem, Ariz.) allowed four hits and three earned runs in 1.2 innings. Junior Jordan McPherson (Simi Valley, Calif.) relieved Holverson in the second inning and recorded the final out of the inning. McPherson threw 4.1 innings and did not allow any hits. Holverson returned to the circle and pitched the final inning for Nevada. Santa Barbara pitcher Jennifer Davis threw a complete-game shutout and allowed two hits while recording seven strikeouts.
Nevada vs. Northern Colorado
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. Behind a complete-game shutout by Nevada pitcher junior Jordan McPherson (Simi Valley, Calif.), the University of Nevada softball team recorded its first win of the 2007 season, downing Northern Colorado 3-0 at the Softball by the Beach Invitational. With the win, the Wolf Pack improved to 1-6 this season while the Bears fell to 1-5.
The Bears threatened in the top of the first inning with two singles but the Pack was able to get out of the inning. Nevada loaded the bases in the fourth inning as sophomores Brittany Puzey (Minden, Nev.) and Michelle Beach (Fallon, Nev.) each drew a walk and freshman Kelsey Starr (Tempe, Ariz.) reached on an error by the Bears second baseman, but the Pack was unable to drive in any of its runners.
Nevada broke the tie in the fifth inning when sophomore Sarah Hunt (Reno, Nev.) led off the inning with a double to right centerfield. Sophomore Katie Stith (Chino Hills, Calif.) grounded out to third base which allowed Hunt to advance. Sophomore Kym Silagyi (Chino, Calif.) hit a triple down the leftfield line, scoring Hunt and putting Nevada up 1-0.
Nevada scored two more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Beach that scored Starr and an RBI by freshman Amanda Nims (Reno, Nev.) who was making her first career appearance with the Pack.
McPherson pitched seven innings for Nevada, allowed six hits and recorded four strikeouts. Hillary Van Otterloo took the loss for Northern Colorado. She pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three earned runs.
The Pack finished the game with four hits while the Bears recorded six. Hunt recorded two hits for Nevada while Beach and Silagyi each recorded one.
Nevada will continue its play in the Softball by the Beach Invitational tomorrow when the Pack faces Long Beach State at 1 p.m.
