SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The University of Nevada softball team had 13 hits and scored 12 runs while shutting out Rutgers to win its final game at the Mustang Classic on Sunday.
The 12-0 run rule victory was Nevada's fourth win of the weekend in five contests and leaves the Wolf Pack at 13-12. Rutgers fell to 7-8 with the loss. Nevada has won three straight games, its longest winning streak of the season.
Erin Jones led the way for the Pack, going 4-for-4 with three doubles. Home runs from Megan Sweet (3) and Megan Fincher (5), also helped the Pack run away from the Scarlet Knights. Sweet was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk, while Fincher finished the morning at 1-for-2 with three RBI and a walk. Sweet also scored four runs. Jones set the Nevada record for doubles in a game on Sunday.
Sara Parsons continued her hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Pack jumped on Rutgers early, scoring twice in the first and never looking back. Fincher's blast was part of a five-run fourth that put the game out of reach.
Karlyn Jones won to go to 8-4 overall in 2013, striking out three and surrendering only four hits. Her ERA stands at 3.48 in 15 appearances. She has pitched a complete game in eight of her nine starts.
Seven players have now recorded at least 10 RBI through 25 games ... They are ... Sara Parsons (25), Erin Jones (21), Megan Fincher (17), Lauren Lastrapes (13), Ashley Butera (13), Jasmine Jenkins (12) and Karley Hopkins (10) ... Molly McWilliams saw her first plate appearance against Rutgers, pinch hitting for Butera ... Nevada scored at least three earned runs against each Rutgers pitcher.
