LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Nevada softball team had its chances on Friday but in the end, the Wolf Pack suffered a pair of losses on the opening day of the Louisville Slugger Invite, hosted by Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
In game one, against UC Santa Barbara on the campus of Long Beach State, Nevada got a three-run home run from Amanda Weis in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead over the Gauchos. But UCSB came back with a four-run seventh off starter McKenna Isenberg and reliever Karlyn Jones to take a 6-4 win.
In the second game, against Long Beach State at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif., Nevada’s bats went silent and the Wolf Pack committed a couple of costly errors in a 4-0 defeat.
Nevada dropped to 10-7 overall on the year. The Wolf Pack is slated to take on Michigan at 2 p.m. on Friday, though heavy rains are forecasted in the area.
Against the Gauchos, Nevada went up early as Megan Sweet singled and Erin Jones doubled down the right-field line to score Sweet all the way from first. Isenberg cruised until the third, when UCSB tied it on a sacrifice fly.
The Gauchos scored again in the top of the sixth to go up 2-1, but Erin Jones and Jasmine Jenkins led off the bottom of the sixth singles. With one out, Weis clubbed her sixth home run of the year. But the lead was short-lived.
Against LBSU, Nevada only had two runners reach second base against 49er starter Erin Jones-Wesley and three errors led to a pair of unearned runs in the 4-0 loss. Sara Parson had a couple of singles and a stolen base for the Pack in that game.
