SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Nevada softball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions on Friday at the Gaucho Classic hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
Nevada opened play with a tough 1-0 loss at the hands of in-state rival UNLV and then saw UCSB come-from-behind to fall 3-2 to the host Gauchos.
The Wolf Pack fell to 3-9 with the losses. Nevada returns to play on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. against No. 23 Houston and then will play San Diego at 3 p.m. Live audio is available for free at NevadaWolfPack.com
Sophomore Caylin Campbell collected three hits on the day and extended her hitting streak to nine straight games. Sophomore Sara Parsons homered for the third time this season and second time in three games.
Against UCSB, Nevada fell behind early as the Gauchos scored one in the second. But Nevada tied it in the third when Chelsea Barilli singled on a bunt, moved to second on a single by Campbell. Lauren Lastrapes then laced a single to left to score Barilli.
In the fourth, Nevada took the lead when Parsons blasted her third home run of the year.
But the Gauchos took the lead in the fifth when Shelby Wisdom knocked a two-run home run that was barely fair inside the left-field foul pole.
Nevada got a leadoff walk in the sixth but was unable muster any further offense.
Campbell and Lastrapes each had two hits in the game for Nevada.
UNLV got all of the offense it needed in the first inning. A leadoff single by Paige Emerson followed by a singles from Tayler Aleman and Tayler Van Acker, the latter scoring Emerson.
From there, Mallary Darby scattered six more hits and pitched scoreless ball but she was saddled with the loss and fell to 3-4 on the year as she also suffered the loss against UCSB. She struck out a season-high nine and walked just two against the Rebels.
