RENO, Nev. -
The University of Nevada soccer team will open up the 2013 season with an exhibition match against the Nevada men's club team Friday 7 p.m. at Mackay Stadium. The season marks the fourth year under Dr. Melissa Price, featuring eight returning starters and seven newcomers in the program's second year in the Mountain West. The exhibition is free to the public.
"We are excited and ready to put the final touches on our preparation for the fall season," head Coach Dr. Melissa Price said. "Leadership, confidence, courage, and an attitude of excellence are the cornerstones of our future success. We're ready to work and challenge to be one of the best teams in the Mountain West."
Nevada finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 7-10-3 in its inaugural year as a member of the Mountain West, finishing the regular season in sixth place.
The Wolf Pack enters the season looking to build on its second round Mountain West tournament finish last year. The squad begins its second Mountain West campaign with a good mix of veteran leadership and youth on the roster (five seniors, seven juniors, six sophomores, and seven freshmen). The team returns eight starters from the 2012 club that ended the year with a 1-0 loss to New Mexico in the semifinal round of the MW tournament, following a 1-0 win over Boise State in the quarterfinals.
Offensively, Nevada will lean on the team's returning leading scorer, junior Chrisalyn Fonte. Fonte started in all 20 matches for Nevada last season. The Union City, Calif., native scored five goals and added 13 points for the Pack, finishing the season with 21 shots on goal.
Seniors Aleina Dominguez and Chivon Crump, along with juniors Megan Khademi and Bobby Reilly, all played in at least 15 matches last season and should see their roles and minutes increase in the Nevada midfield this season. Sophomores Lindsey Salcido, Alyissa deRonde, and Bailey Torrez will add to the depth at the position. Salcido appeared in all 20 matches last season, while deRonde played in 15.
Senior Kori Disarufino returns to lead the Wolf Pack forward group. Disarufino played in all 20 matches during the 2102 season, ending the season with a goal and 13 shots on goal.
Sophomores Daisha Jones-Oglesby and Erin Saxton will be called upon to step into larger roles in Nevada's offensive scheme. Jones-Oglesby saw time in 14 matches last season, notably scoring the match-winning goal in the team's 1-0 win over Boise State in the Mount West Tournament quarterfinals. Saxton appeared in seven matches last year.
2012 Mountain West Tournament team honoree Chelsea Fricke leads an experienced Wolf Pack defensive line. Fricke played in all 20 matches last season, pitching in two goals. Fellow senior Danielle Green returns for her last season in silver and blue. Green also played in all of Nevada's matches during the 2012 season.
Juniors Madison Lorenzen, Kellyn Morning, and Laura Voss will line up with Fricke and Green to provide a formidable front just outside of the net. Lorenzen led the team in assists last season with eight. Morning and Lorenzen both appeared in all 20 matches last year.
Junior Melanie Bertrand and sophomore Kelsey Quintos make up the team's goalkeeper corps. Bertrand appeared in three matches with one start last season.
