April 19, 2005
KUNA, Idaho - The Wolf Pack women's golf team remained in eighth place at the Western Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Tuesday after carding a second round 310 (+22) at the Falcon Crest Golf Course in Kuna, Idaho.
Nevada, which shaved off 24 strokes from Monday's first round of 334 (+46), sits at 68-over par 644 heading into Wednesday's final round. The Wolf Pack trails seventh-place UTEP by eight strokes and sixth-place Hawai`i by 11 strokes. San Jose State (595) has a one stroke advantage over six-time defending champion Tulsa (596) for the team lead going into the final round.
"I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves yesterday knowing we had to win the tournament to make it to regionals that we played passive golf instead of aggressive golf," said first-year head coach Jody Dansie. "Today, we played the complete opposite. We attacked the pins and we were not scared of the golf course."
Sophomore Nicole deGennaro (Tucson, Ariz.), the Wolf Pack's top player, rebounded from a 12-over par 84 on Monday to shoot 3-over 75 in the second round. deGennaro finished the day with one birdie, 12 pars and four bogeys. She is currently tied for 25th place with teammate Erin LaPlaunt (Elk Grove, Calif.). LaPlaunt, who led Nevada on Monday with an 81 (+9), shot a second round 78 (+6) and stands at 15-over par 159 for the tournament with deGennaro.
Sophomore Kelly Burke (Golden, Colo.) moved up eight spots on Tuesday and is tied for 30th after carding a 77 (+5) during the second round. Burke is at 19-over par 163 heading into Wednesday's final round. Freshman Heather Olmstead (Puyallup, Wash.) is 33rd at 20-over 164 after shooting 80 (+8) on Tuesday and freshman Jennie Pleas (Lihue, Hawaii) is 37th at 25-over par 169.
"We are going to go out tomorrow to move up the leaderboard and show that we are better than we played on Monday," Dansie said.
Nevada will be paired with UTEP during Wednesday's final round and the teams will begin on hole number 10 at 8:30 a.m. (MT) Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
