Women’s golf to start spring campaign at Stanford

Feb. 9, 2017

RENO, Nev. – To kick off the 2017 spring campaign, the Nevada women’s golf team will travel over to Palo Alto, Calif. to participate in the two-round Peg Barnard Invitational, hosted by Stanford.

“This is one of the best fields we will see this spring,” said head coach Kathleen Takaishi. “Seven of the 11 teams are ranked inside the top 78 in the nation, with Stanford being No. 1. We’ll be competing at a great golf course that fits our game very well. I am excited to see how the team performs.”

This is the third straight year that the Wolf Pack has competed in this tournament. Last year Nevada notched an 11th place finish and junior Celyn Khoo placed in the top 30 in the field. The 11-team field features the top-ranked team in the nation in host Stanford, and three others which rank in the top 50 nationally. San Jose State, which is one of those top 50 teams, is the only other team from the Mountain West in the field.

Khoo returns to the Nevada lineup this weekend after she missed the last two events of the fall season due to an injury. In the two events in which she did participate she recorded two top 15 finishes. Freshman Mari Nishiura will play as the team’s No. 1 this weekend after she posted a productive rookie fall season. Nishiura averaged 74.1 in four events and secured her first collegiate top 10 back in September.

Junior Jordan Keyser will fill the middle spot on the lineup after she finished her fall season with one of the best performances of her career. Keyser finished in the top 25 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown after posting her best tournament score at 3-under par. Freshman Katy Rutherford will also be active this weekend and has a top 15 finish under her belt. Sophomore Chaithra Katamneni rounds out the Pack lineup and shot a career-best 67 in her last tournament round.

Live scoring for the entire tournament will be available on GolfStat.com.
