Chad Spencer is in his third year as the head coach of the Nevada women's golf program.
Spencer will guide a young team in 2012-13, one that features three freshmen and three sophomores to go along with just two upperclassmen as the Pack moves into its first season in the Mountain West Conference.
"We have a young team but we have some talent on this team and I'm excited to see how we grow and compete during the course of the season, Spencer said.
Last year, the Pack finished 10th in the Western Athletic Conference Championships with a young team. Nikke Prichard, a freshman, highlighted the season with a WAC Player of the Week Award in April, the third such honor in Spencer's tenure as head coach.
Four of Spencer's players earned Academic All-Conference accolades as Alex Borcherts, Louise Yi, Taylor Bickell and Prichard were honored. Borcherts was named to NCGA All-American Scholar Team
In 2010-11, Spencer guided the Wolf Pack squad to a strong campaign, highlighted by a pair of individual victories by Lauren Hernandez, first at the Circling Raven Invitational hosted by Gonzaga in the fall and then at the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona in the spring.
Hernandez and freshman Joyce Chong each won WAC Player of the Week honors during the course of the season. Hernandez and junior Jamie Yam were both named to the All-WAC second team for their performances during the seasons.
Four players earned Academic All-WAC honors during Spencer's first season: Ana de la Maza, Hernandez, Yam and Yi.
Yam was also named to the NCGA All-American Scholar Team.
Prior to his promotion to head coach in the 2010-11 season, Spencer spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach for the Wolf Pack men's and women's golf programs. In those two seasons, the Nevada men's golf program turned in 11 top five finishes, including a pair of wins, sent an individual to the NCAA West Regionals each year and earned six individual All-WAC selections. The Wolf Pack women's program finished in the top five seven times and saw two players earn All-WAC honors in those two years.
Spencer came to the University of Nevada after spending three years as an instructor and club fitter at River Park Golf Center in Fresno, Calif.
He also spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons playing professionally on the Canadian Tour. In 2006, he finished 39th on Order of Merit on the Canadian Tour and was ranked in the Official World Golf Rankings.
A 2005 graduate of Fresno State with a bachelor's degree in communications, Spencer is no stranger to Western Athletic Conference golf. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs, earning second-team All-WAC honors in 2003 and first-team accolades in 2004. Spencer also garnered All-Southwest Region accolades after turning in nine top 20 finishes in 12 events his senior year. A team captain in 2003-04, he was also active in the Big Heroes Little Heroes program and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes while at Fresno State.
After finishing his collegiate playing career, he served as an assistant coach at his alma mater in 2004-05.
A member of the United States Golf Association, Spencer graduated from Rocklin (Calif.) High School in 2000.
Spencer and his wife, Tiffany, met while they were playing golf at Fresno State. The couple has a daughter, Ellie (2).
