Nevada Women's Basketball Upends Bay Area Pro-Am In Opening Exhibition

RENO, Nev. - Newcomers Sabrina Keys and Brandi Fitzgerald helped Nevada hold off a late rally by Bay Area Pro-Am by scoring in double-figures and freshman Nicole Hayman hit five free of six throws in the final 34 seconds as Nevada secured a season-opening exhibition victory here Sunday afternoon at Lawlor Events Center, 87-83.

Keys, a junior from Berkeley, Calif. (Purdue University) and freshman Brandi Fitzgerald (Moreno, Valley, Calif.) pitched in with 16 and 13 points, respectively, while Hayman (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) added nine markers. Keys led Nevada in scoring with 16 and was followed by Fitzgerald's 13, Traci Graham (Jr., Reno, Nev.) with 12 and Meghan McGuire (So., Anaheim, Calif.) with 11. Jessica Preslar (Jr., Roseville, Calif.) had nine rebounds to lead the Pack while Fitzgerald added eight and Keys seven as the Pack out-rebounded Bay Area Pro-Am, 50-37.

Sarah Richen had 29 points and 11 rebounds while Melanie Turner had 15 points and Alicia Hernandez chipped in with 11 points to lead Bay Area Pro-Am.

Nevada shot 52 percent from the field, including 50 percent from three-point range (6-12). Bay Area Pro-Am shot just 38 percent from the field and only 24 percent from long-range but converted 12 of 15 free throws. Bay Area Pro-Am had 20 steals and 16 turnovers to just 10 steals for Nevada and 31 turnovers.

 
 

The Wolf Pack built a steady lead, going into halftime with a 43-36 edge. They were able to increase that to a 13-point advantage, 76-63, with 6:17 remaining, but Bay Area Pro-Am made a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to cut it to 78-77 with 51 seconds left in the game.

Nevada got up by five, 82-77, with 29 seconds remaining and then let Bay Area Pro-Am cut it to just one point, 84-83, with 19 seconds left. Nicole Hayman hit two of her five free throws in the final 34 seconds to put the Pack up 86-83 with 17 seconds remaining and Preslar added a charity toss with five seconds left to make the final score 87-83.

The Pack concludes the exhibition season with Sonoma State here next Saturday, Nov. 12, for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff at Lawlor Events Center. Exhibition tickets are $4 each. The men play Humboldt State immediately following the women's game in their final exhibition contest. Tickets are good for both games.
